"The Teachings of Don Carlos"
is a book whose main objective is to provide, through exercises and
explanations, a way of putting into practice many of the surprising proposals
contained in the work of Carlos Castaneda.
It is directed principally to those readers who, in spite of having a
great interest in Castaneda's work, have not found a way to apply "the
teachings" to the context of their everyday life, so far from those
solitary and mysterious places which he narrates to us through his books.
Regardless of how strange the world of don Juan-style sorcery may seem to
us, we have discovered a notable confluence between the content of Castaneda's
proposals and the vision of the indigenous mesoamericans past and present, which
could well prove applicable and very beneficial for modern man and society
which, being in a constant state of conflict, no doubt requires a fresh
perspective for renewal and exploration of healthier ways of living and being.
After having worked for more than twelve years in the practical
application of the principals, techniques, and proposals contained in
Castaneda's work, in my own person as well as those who have participated in the
work groups which I have promoted and coordinated, we offer this work as a
testimony to the results we have obtained. It is not our purpose to establish an
ultimate truth in relation to the mysteries set forth by Castaneda, but to
simply indicate the way in which we have approached them and show how, upon
carrying out these principals, we have seen our own lives, and the lives of
those who have participated with us, change substantially. At the same time, we
seek to share our experience through 77 precisely detailed exercises, which any
interested reader can put into practice and experience for himself the access to
the "separate reality" spoken of in the work of Castaneda.
Another of the primary antecedents of this work is found in the author's
experience of living and working in indigenous communities of toltec descent, in
particular the nahuas and huicholes, from where were derived many of these
applications which, in combination with those resulting from the living study of
the work of Castaneda, have made up the content of our courses and workshops, as
well as that of the present work.
"The Teachings of don Carlos" is not intended to be a simple
repetition of the ideas and concepts contained in the work of Castaneda, but
rather it provides a specific method whereby such concepts may be applied within
a context closer to that of the average person. Therefore, the techniques
presented for practical application in such areas as, "stalking", "the
art of dreaming", "the quasi memories of the other self", "stopping
the internal dialogue", among others, are - in many cases - a more detailed
description of practices mentioned only superficially by Castaneda, while others
are completely original exercises which, nevertheless, share the same sustaining
principles as the donjuanist teachings and which lead to similar results.
More than a book of analysis or speculation, "The Teachings of don
Carlos" is a book having to do with practical application which treats the "warrior's"
way as a real alternative to our way of living, which can be experienced by
anyone who has sufficient interest, without the need of anyone to assist him.
The work is divided into three parts that include an introduction, ten
chapters and an appendix. The first part is a general explanation of the basic
concepts on which are based the practices of the warrior's on don Juan's world,
related to us by Castaneda. In the following two sections, which compose the
heart of the work, are found more detailed explanations and practical exercises
in the fundamental areas of "The Teachings of don Carlos".
The second part is entitled "The special handling of ordinary reality"
and it refers to that part of "the teachings" which take place in
ordinary everyday reality but which have the capacity to transform it into a
magical experience.
The third is termed "The access to the separate reality" and is
comprised of the practices for "the left side" that permit the
practitioner to enter into states of non-ordinary reality, which reveal through
the unsuspected possibilities of awareness, the existence of a "separate
reality" in the world and a hidden form of awareness in each one of us
called "the awareness of the other self".
At the end are included, in addition to a bibliography, two glossaries of
classified techniques. The first of these contains all those found in the eight
works of Carlos Castaneda (up to 1990), mentioning the book and page number to
aid in finding a specific technique. The second contains all the techniques
found in this book. For further reference a general index of the present work
has been added at the very end.

Toltecs of the new millenium is a
book that deals with survival of the spiritual tradition of the ancient toltecs
at the dawn of the third millenium.
If the profundity and the richness of prehispanic indigenous knowledge is
something which is normally accepted without difficulty, due to written
testimonies, pictographs, and archeologists which give testimony to them, as
well as myths, legends and oral traditions which speak of the greatness of the
ancient toltecs, it is almost always assumed that this richness is a thing of
the past from which, perhaps, we can "glean" a few isolated features.
But it is not that way.
In this very moment there exist in Mexico indigenous groups which have
been able to survive and keep practically intact their way of life, their
religion, and original culture and who are the direct inheritors of the
spiritual tradition and the material culture of the historical toltecs.
In an era in which the search for spiritual paths is intensified due to
the growing pressure of the crises of our time, the discovery of the survival of
the toltec tradition constitutes an event without precedent.
In a first part, Victor Sanchez reveals to us how and why he enters into
contact with the surviving toltecs and the spiritual task revealed to him among
them.
In the second part, he gives us a brief sketch of the characteristics of
Toltequity, the geographic and historical location of the ancient toltecs and
the way in which they linked and transmitted their tradition to those indigenous
groups which keep alive that tradition. He tells us also of some characteristics
of the lineage or group of indigenous peoples with whom he connects as a
participant.
And in the third part, the author gives us some examples of what he
proposes as a new and more consistent way to approximate the indigenous world;
what he terms "anti-anthropology" and which refers to the necessity to
"submerge oneself" fully as a participant in that world, assuming the
necessary transformation of one's person as a requisite for entrance into the "separate
reality". In this section, which in a way is the most important part of the
book, Victor Sanchez relates three experiences lived in the world of the
Wirrarika; the indigenous peoples of Mexico who have kept in their purest form
the practices of ancient Toltequity. Each one of these experiences corresponds
to a phase of the process which carried him each time further inside the way of
the Toltec tradition.
One of the fundamental proposals of Toltecs of the New Millenium is that
in the elements, forms and practices of Toltequity, the searcher of our time can
find the keys which bring him to encounter the toltec which, secretly, we all
carry inside, and constitute thus the seed of new Toltequity which each time
with more force, begins to manifest itself beyond the confines of the strictly
indigenous, representing a substantial alternative for non-indigenous peoples
who live in modern society.
One of the principal values of this book is that, placing itself at a
prudent distance from academic studies of the so-called "scientific
anthropology", as well as esoteric literature or "new age"
dealing with indigenous knowledge, the author presents to us the testimony of an
experience which, without limiting itself to the narrow conceptual framework of
the academic investigator, rigorously relates the practical experiences among
indigenous peoples of flesh and blood, whose concrete existence can indeed be
verified.
